The Old Fortress is one of the most impressive fortification works in Greece. It is the first thing visitors encounter as the ferry approaches Corfu.

The fortifications were constructed over a period of about 15 centuries, namely the Byzantine, the Early Venetian and the Late Venetian period. The town was under Venetian rule until 1797 when Napoleon conquered the Venetian Republic. From 1807 to 1814, the island was ruled by the French. The English succeeded them, remaining in Corfu until 1864 when the island became a part of the Greek state.

All I could see in front of me was a contrast of times. On the left i could see the centuries of history and the battles the Old Fortress has endured. On the right I could see yachts anchored and enjoying the view of the castle and Corfu.

In different times, these boats would have been bombarded with cannon balls. Today they are welcomed. The contract of the old times and the new times in one image is striking. Old meets new.
